Laying of porcelain tile: we disassemble it in stages

Using all the advantages of porcelain tile, you can easily create a high-quality and durable coating. Information about the properties of the tile, its size and grade is indicated in the article on the package. Before starting work, the marking of the entire batch is checked for compliance with the tonality, color, caliber and surface quality.

Preliminary stage

Before starting work, it is advisable to unpack and lay the tile on a soft coating. For example, Ametis by Estima porcelain tile, within the same collection, has several designs (faces) to create a "lively", naturalistic effect. We pre-distribute the tile in such a way that instances with the same or similar pattern do not appear next to each other.

We calculate the granite for a given area. The optimal size of the seam is from 2 to 5 mm.

Important: for the floor covering, matt or lappated porcelain tile is recommended, which does not slip when water gets on it. This option is presented in the collections of Terra, Luna, Selection and many others.

Preparation of the base

If the floor has a slope of more than 2 cm, it is leveled with a screed. The base for the porcelain tile should be perfectly smooth, so that cracks do not appear later. The period of complete drying of the screed is up to 28 days. Also, pre-waterproofing of wet rooms and laying of underfloor heating, if there is one.

Lifehack: if the floor does not have a critical curvature, then you can do without complex work and use the floor leveling system (SVP) when laying. This is a fairly inexpensive and effective device.

The finished screed is cleaned of dust, grease and other contaminants, and then several layers of primer are applied to increase adhesion. The walls are leveled with plaster and then treated similarly to the floor.

Applying glue

Porcelain tile almost does not absorb water and this is its advantage. But in order for it to be fixed on the base, only a special glue with high adhesion and elasticity is needed. It is better to abandon the cement-sand mixture for tiles.

The adhesive mixture, diluted to a state of thick sour cream, is applied with a combed trowel both on the floor (or walls) and on the tile. A double layer allows you to eliminate the unevenness of the base. On the back side of the tile, the glue is applied with a smooth edge of the tool, and then leveled with teeth.

The laying process

The work must be carried out at a temperature of at least 5° C. The underfloor heating is turned off. Pre-defined with the layout type.

It's can be:

  • straight
  • diagonal
  • with an offset of 1/3
  • "herringbone"
  • modular

The more complex the drawing of porcelain tile, the simpler the layout should be. Estima gives a hint by selectively offering the tile geometry for different collections.

The floor covering starts from the center of the room and is carried out symmetrically to the right and to the left. This is done so that the clippings are located against the wall, where, most likely, they will be covered by furniture or plumbing. Also, to increase aesthetics, solid tiles are laid at the threshold and external corners. In order not to get lost, they apply markings.

The thickness of the seams is maintained with the help of special crosses. Pressing it to the base, the tile is slightly shifted and tapped with a rubber hammer to remove the remaining air from the glue. You can adjust the styling within 10 minutes. The adhesive solution protruding in the grooves is removed with a wet sponge.

Preliminary marking is carried out using a level, a rail and a plumb line. The work is carried out from top to bottom, so that, if necessary, cut the tiles at the baseboards. The sequence and list of actions are the same as for the floor.

Grouting of joints

На последнем этапе в швы между плитками вводят затирку. Чтобы не повредить поверхность, используется резиновый мастерок. Крестики и СВП перед финишными работами удаляют, а также вычищают мусор и остатки укладочных материалов.

Grout also plays a decorative role – its color is selected by the designer at the design stage.

Important: do not use light colors for the floor, especially in the corridor or in the kitchen - they quickly get dirty.
